Full Dentures, Partials or Implant-Supported Dentures? A Plain-English Guide
Losing teeth changes everyday things: what you order at a restaurant, how you smile in photos, even how clearly you speak. If you’re thinking about dentures, you have more choices today than your parents or grandparents did, and the right one depends on how many teeth you’re missing, the health of your jawbone and what matters most to you.
At Comprehensive Family Dental in St. Peters, Dr. Jay Lien offers every option below in one office. Here’s how they compare.
Partial Dentures
A partial fills in gaps when you still have some healthy natural teeth. Replacement teeth sit on a gum-colored base, and small clasps hold it to the teeth you have.
Partials are a good fit if a few teeth are missing in different spots and your remaining teeth are strong. They also keep those teeth from drifting into the empty spaces, which helps protect your bite.
Full Dentures
A full denture replaces every tooth in your upper or lower jaw. It rests on your gums and stays in place with suction, sometimes helped by a little adhesive.
Full dentures are the most affordable way to replace a whole arch of teeth, and they don’t require surgery. The trade-off is that they can shift while you eat or talk, especially on the lower jaw, and the bone underneath slowly shrinks over the years, so the fit changes and they’ll need adjusting.
We also offer digital dentures, which are designed from precise digital scans of your mouth rather than traditional impressions.
Implant Overdentures
An overdenture looks like a regular denture, but it snaps onto a small number of dental implants placed in your jaw. That connection makes a big difference: the denture stays put when you bite into an apple or laugh at dinner, and you can still take it out to clean it.
Because implants stimulate the jawbone the way natural roots do, overdentures also help slow the bone loss that follows tooth loss.
All-on-4 Full-Arch Treatment
All-on-4 replaces a whole arch of teeth with a fixed bridge anchored to four implants. Unlike a denture, it doesn’t come out at night. For many people, it’s the closest thing to having their own teeth back.
It takes more planning and a bigger investment up front, and you’ll need enough healthy bone to support the implants. If bone has thinned, grafting or ridge augmentation can often rebuild it first, right here in our office.

How Dr. Lien Helps You Decide
Every plan starts with a conversation about your goals and budget, followed by an exam and a CBCT 3D scan if implants are on the table. The scan shows exactly how much bone you have and where the nerves sit, so Dr. Lien can tell you honestly which options will work for you.
Dr. Lien completed a General Practice Residency with advanced surgical training, so implant placement, extractions and bone grafting are usually handled here instead of being sent to another office. Implants are placed with computer guidance for accuracy.
Getting Used to Your New Teeth
Whatever you choose, give yourself a few weeks to adjust. Your tongue, cheeks and facial muscles need time to learn the new fit, and some soreness early on is normal. We’ll see you for follow-up visits to make adjustments until it feels right.
Cost, Insurance and Payment Options
Many PPO plans cover part of the cost of dentures, and coverage for implant options varies by plan. We’ll check your benefits before treatment and walk you through what you’ll owe. If you don’t have insurance, our Elite Smiles+ Membership Club costs $99 a year and includes discounts on procedures, and CareCredit and Sunbit financing are available.
